Unshared Childhoods
Concept, Design, and Direction: Tanvi Shah
“Really what keeps us apart at the end of years is unshared childhood.”
– A K Ramanujan
Unshared Childhoods is a collective effort at imagination disguised as a play.
It is designed around eight unsent letters from around the world. These letters — written by folks who don't usually write for the public — were never read by their intended recipients. They are scaffolded by live music, movement, ISL interpretation, food, non-verbal moderation, and patchwork godhadis quilted by generational weavers.
Spurred on by teenage party games, Marquez’s short stories, romanticised tales of glass bottle messages afloat at sea, and a fascination for compound adjectives, this piece explores the notion that all desire stems from a space of lack... as does all destruction.
Premiering in Glasgow (2019) as part of a call for original works created for intimate spaces, Unshared has had 21 performances in Bombay's living rooms and non-traditional performance spaces since then.
